The goal of ECB is to use high caliber dancing to produce new work that reflects on and offers insight to the world around us. The company preserves classical line within contemporary choreography and has developed a signature style that pushes ballet to exciting new realms.
Extremely dedicated to his dancers; Artistic Director Mike Gosney’s technique is designed to expand their range of movement while developing a strong body and an open mind. The ECB dancers study exclusively and intensely with Gosney to embody certain qualities: hyper-extension, extreme control, an aggressive and athletic approach to movement, elongated lines, an expressive upper body, and a fully open and stretched facility. He incorporates elements of modern dance styles into his technique, as well as encourages improvisation and the dancers’ own independent artistic choices.
The company’s working vocabulary is based on concepts of the four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. Individually each element represents a major facet of dance: expression, physicality, focus, and freedom. Mike Gosney has founded the company on these principals and unifies them to revolutionize the way dancers study, rehearse, and create choreography, resulting in the dynamic art produced by ECB.
The first and only contemporary ballet company based in Chicago, ECB strives to bring a significantly visceral experience to audiences. Introducing new voices to ballet by commissioning work by fresh, daring choreographers with unique perspectives, and developing signature works within the company itself, ECB's stunning dance performances take the beauty and awe of ballet to a new level. |

“…boasted solid dancing and slick, professional presentation―these ballerinas are firm on toe, not wobbly, a challenge not always met by bigger troupes.”
